Dr. Stone Award 6/00: Explaining Polarity Effects, Two Models by John Chitty

This is an 11-page paper proposing that practitioner skills are as important as techniques in explaining Polarity Therapy effects, though these skills are not fully articulated in the existing literature. A sample curriculum for teaching these skills is proposed. This paper won the American Polarity Therapy Association's "Dr. Stone Award" for scholarly writing in June 2000.

Gifts: How Craniosacral and Polarity Need Each Other by John Chitty

This 4-page article discusses the complementary benefits of these two systems, suggesting that curricula of each would benefit from adding certain features and practices of the other. The resulting synthesis is used in CSES programs under both titles. The article includes a 1-page discussion of therapeutic philosophies: the "Direct" (healing comes from the outside in via the active intervention of the practitioner or other external factor) vs. "Indirect" (healing comes from the inside out as a result of the presence of adequate resources) methods.

Overview of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy by John Chitty

This is an 11-page article to summarize the practice of "Biodynamic" Craniosacral Therapy, and also the content of a biodynamic education. The term "biodynamic" has been used by several branches of practice that are directly or indirectly descended from the original findings of William G. Sutherland, DO (1870-1954), so "biodynamic" is not an exclusive adjective for the work of Franklyn Sills, on which this article is based. However the phrase is used here recognizing Sill's choice of it for his books.

The Heart is Not a Pump by John Chitty

This is a 4-page article adapted from the Spring 2006 issue of Energy, the newsletter of the American Polarity Therapy Association. The article presents an argument for an energetic explanation of the heart's function and gives an experimental protocol for exploring the heart field.

Triune Autonomic Nervous System by John Chitty

This is a 2-page introduction to the Triune Autonomic Nervous System theory (also known as "Polyvagal Theory") and applications. Based on the work of Stephen Porges, PhD, this new view of the autonomic NS revolutionizes trauma therapy understanding and has huge implications for body-centered trauma therapies and anyone dealing with people in any capacity. We highly recommend that readers pursue this topic with Porges' own materials, available at numerous locations on the internet via search using key word such as "Stephen Porges," "Polyvagal" and others.

Dr. Randolph Stone's diplomas. These are very large .jpg files (4-8 MB), so high-speed access is needed. Randolph Stone, DO, DC, ND (1890-1981) was the founder of Polarity Therapy.

Touch and Attitude. This is a one-page handout summarizing an experiment by John Upledger, DO, in the electrical resistance of tissues with differing attitude variables.

Triune Autonomic Nervous System Applications by John Chitty (PDF version, 10 MB file)

Triune Autonomic Nervous System Applications by John Chitty (PowerPoint version,2 MB file)

This is a 21-page slide presentation exploring possible methods to work with the Triune Autonomic Nervous System. This presentation was prepared for an audience with little or no Craniosacral Therapy training. To actually use this, knowledge of Franklyn Sills' "State of Balance" concept, a foundational skill in Craniosacral Therapy, is essential. However other readers may find it interesting as well, as it provides images and other supportive material to understand the Triune Autonomic Nervous System.

WARNING the PDF version is a huge file (10 MB) due to the many color images; high-speed internet access is desirable PLUS you will want to re-set your Adobe Acrobat memory allocation to the maximum possible RAM of your machine, and close other applications and windows when opening this file. If it won't open, or you get a memory error message after the first 2-3 pages, the probable solution is allocating more RAM.

The PowerPoint version requires Microsoft PowerPoint (obviously) but is much easier to download.

Triune Autonomic Nervous System Diagram by John Chitty (PDF version, 92KB file)

This is a 3-page diagram from the above presentations. This version is updated compared to the prior versions in the above items; these three pages replace the two pages formerly used.

Appendix E Study Guide by John Chitty

This is a 3-page table showing all of Dr. Stone's charts in order of appearance, and categorizing them by their Five Elements, Three Principles, and Primary Energy relevance. Note that the elemental allocations are not the conventional attributes of Polarity Therapy theory, but rather the "Process Oriented Bodywork" scheme used in Appendix E of the APTA "Standards for Practice." This approach is taken in the chart to facilitate study of "Appendix E."

Polarity Tea and the Biologic Electron by John Chitty

This is a one-page article describing the benefits of Dr. Stone's herbal tea, and proposing that some benefits relate to the extraordinary electromagnetic attributes of certain ingredients.

Bodyreading the Three Principles by John Chitty

This is a 5-page article summarizing how the Three Energy Principles (Yang, Yin and Neutral) may be observed in the body.

Business Class Notes by John Chitty

We teach an energetic approach to career development. This is a 2-page outline of content covered in the RPP program business classes.

Five Elements Summary by John Chitty

This is a 2-page "key words" summary for the Five Elements concept.

General Session Summary by John Chitty

This is a 1-page summary of the many different versions of the Polarity Therapy "General Session" which have appeared in print over the years. While Dr. Stone did not actually use a "General Session," subsequent teachers and practitioners have found the idea to be very useful.

Peter Levine on Polarity Therapy

Peter Levine, PhD, is a world authority on trauma resolution, and his method is an effective implementation of Dr. Stone's Polarity Therapy principles using a primarily verbal interface. For information on Levine, visit his site www.ergos.org. Levine studied with Dr. Stone in 1966.

Mystery of Cerebrospinal Fluid by Scott Zamurut

This is a 5-page article exploring the numerous quotations about Cerebrospinal Fluid in the writings of Dr. Stone and his Craniosacral Therapy counterpart W. G. Sutherland, DO. Both of these energy medicine pioneers held that the CSF is the informational link between spirit and matter, conveying the ordering principle of Higher Intelligence into the cells of the body.

First Tour of Cranial Bones

This is a one-page handout that introduces the bones of the cranial vault and base to new students.

Craniosacral Therapy Training Module Overview

This is a one-page summary showing the general content of each module of the Craniosacral therapy 50-day training. This plan is subject to change, of course.

Practitioner Skills by John Chitty

This is a one-page chart explaining the practitioner skills which we think are required in order to practice energetic therapies such as Polarity and Craniosacral. Our class times usage is basically 1/3 practitioner skills, 1/3 techniques and 1/3 anatomy including energy anatomy.

Three Principles Summary by John Chitty

This is a 2-page "key words" chart summarizing attributes of the Three Principles.

Language of Yin and Yang by John Chitty

This is a 2-page "Yin and Yang"attributes chart exploring relationship implications of the Three Principles.

New Insights into Trauma Therapy by John Chitty

This is a 16 page illustrated lecture describing the work on Peter Levine, PhD, in the context of Polarity Therapy.

What Happens in a Session? by John Chitty

This is a 1-page chart used to describe the practitioner/client relationship and subsequent unfoldment of the healing process during a session.

Nervous System Balance Protocols

Shows two protocols for nervous system balancing, "Sympathetic Balance" as developed by Jim Said, and Will Leichnitz's "NS Protocol" as presented at APTA conferences.

Facilitation Protocols

A 1-page chart explaining techniques for "Facilitation," which refers to chronically activated sensory nerve loops. These deliver a pain message to the brain even though the original cause is no longer present. This chart is directly based on the teaching of Franklyn Sills.

Polarity Therapy History 1 (Stone Chronology)

This is a 2-page summary of key dates and events in the life of Dr. Randolph Stone (1890-1981), founder of Polarity Therapy.

Polarity Therapy History 2 (Pannetier comments)

This is one page of transcribed-from-audio tape comments about Dr. Stone, made by Pierre Pannetier, ND, in 1982. Dr. Pannetier (1914-1984) was Stone's leading student and his successor as primary teacher of Polarity Therapy in the 1970's and early 1980's.

Polarity Therapy History 3 (Hilger article)

This 8-page biographical article was written by Louise Hilger (ca. 1910-1988) in 1968, probably with Stone's collaboration and approval. She was the daughter of the sister of Stone's wife, therefore Stone's niece, and served Stone as secretary for over 40 years. This memoir contains many interesting historical vignettes, and also a large dose of commentary about Stone's (and her) spritual beliefs. There are numerous reasons to emphasize clear separation of these spiritual beliefs from the practice of Polarity Therapy, based on developments in subsequent years.
